What you'll learn
This is the next step for beginners who have learnt some basic chords already. Many beginners will play the same strumming pattern for every song. It's not crime but there is so much more you can do to keep things interesting and keep challenging yourself to expand your skills. This course is a bit of an intensive and will help beginners move a little closer to becoming an intermediate player. I'll teach you quality playing and practicing techniques that will serve you for the rest of your ukulele playing life. If you have any ambition to play in some sort of ensemble or band, knowing how to choose complimentary playing patterns and music styles will be really useful.
This class is perfect for
Adults, teenagers and seniors wanting to explore or improve ukulele playing with a skilled and patient teacher.
Ukulele: Steph (she/her) is a fully qualified James Hill Ukulele Initiate teacher with 10 years of ukulele teaching experience. Her ukulele teaching began as an accompaniment to singing and as she studied ukulele teaching techniques, she expanded her knowledge of what a ukulele is capable of and went on to explore fingerpicking instrumental pieces and solo improvisation. Steph runs a community ukestra (contemporary ukulele ensemble) and an instrumental ukulele quartet. Online, Steph teaches private lessons, ukulele literacy (music theory with ukulele), From Newcomer To Super Strummer courses, jams and various workshops. Singing: Steph discovered her singing talents in her early twenties by accident and music quickly became her full time passion and profession. She went straight into studying music theory and vocal technique with the aim of being a professional choir director. Steph has been a singer and choir director for 25 years. She currently directs a women’s choir and has been the musical director of many community choirs and special community projects. Steph teaches private voice lessons and group vocal harmony classes online.
What to bring
A ukulele of reasonable quality.
An electronic clip-on tuner or a tuning app on your phone.
Please be aware that many colourful cheaper ukuleles don't hold their tuning, hurt your fingers and are effectively toys. A slightly higher investment in a playable ukulele can still be relatively inexpensive but are more likely to lead to playing music joyfully for many years to come. Ask advice from a reputable music store that takes the ukulele seriously. I can also give you some advice on choosing a ukulele in a lesson.
