What you'll learn

In this class I will be taking you through my songwriting process as well as some tips and tricks I've picked up from writing with/for other artists. We'll take a look at how to get started as a songwriter and how to approach looking after your publishing. We'll also be diving deeper into the world of the music industry and talk about some of my high and low moments and what I've learnt along the way. From winning The X Factor South Africa and sharing a stage with acts like One Direction and Nicki Minaj, to signing record deals with major labels like Sony and Universal. I'll touch on why staying independent might be the best option for you. I want to share my journey and offer my insight into this amazing but brutal industry. There's a lot that goes on behind the scenes that you might not know about.

JETHRO TAIT is a singer-songwriter originally from Cape Town now based in Johannesburg, South Africa. Having started playing guitar at the age of 13, Jethro has a foundation in acoustic sounds but has dabbled in electronic music as well. His strong songwriting abilities have gained him recognition - having written chart-topping singles not only for himself but for some of South Africa’s top artists. After signing a publishing deal with Universal Music Publishing in 2013, Jethro took his first step into the industry as a songwriter. He has since penned songs for The Voice season 2 winner, Craig Lucas (charting singles ‘I Said This’and ‘Smother’ as well as others on the album,) Dj Kent, Pascal & Pearce, Majozi, Mathew Gold and Richard Stirton (The Voice Season 1 winner.) In 2014 Jethro joined a band named ‘FOUR’ who went on to win the first season of The X Factor South Africa. The group went on to share the stage with international acts such as One Direction and Nicki Minaj before deciding to part ways and pursue solo careers. At the end of 2017 Jethro released his first solo offering by lending his vocal and songwriting ability to Pascal & Pearce for the smash hit “Running Wild,” which topped charts across the country and reached Multi-Platinumn certification. Riding on the success of “Running Wild,” Jethro has since released a number of well received singles, including a collaboration with DJ Kent on the summer dance jam titled, “The Words.” A lyrically suave heartbreak song titled “Who Are You.” As well as his most successful solo single to date “SAD” which topped charts across SA radio and got a nod from The SAMAs (South African Music Awards) for “Record of The Year.” On the 18th of September 2020 Jethro released a vulnerable and moving debut EP titled “I Don’t Sleep.” It received a SAMA nomination for “Best Pop Album.” The 6 track EP is a collection of songs that are very personal and honest making it a perfect introduction to who Jethro is as an artist.
